Marathon Fundraiser

Scott Ash, Director of Operations for the Nebraska Sports Council, ran the Half Marathon on May 4 and he ran  for a reason. WATCH THE 10/11 NEWS COVERAGE and read he sent out to friends and family before the race.

Friends and Family –
I am running the Lincoln Half Marathon in two weeks and I am running for a reason. I am running for members of our military who have suffered traumatic brain injury (TBI) from encounters with enemy improvised explosive devices (IED).

You may or may not know that Madonna Rehabilitation Center, right here in Lincoln, NE treats members of our military from all over the world for this injury. And, I have chosen to run for them.

I am raising money for this cause by taking pledges.  If you can spare any amount of money to help the cause, I and we would appreciate it.  Your donation is tax-deductible. I have personally pledged $100 and approximately 2-hours of running for these troops.  My goal is to raise $10,000 for the cause.  If you want to help, please make out a check to the Nebraska Sports Council, P.O. Box 29366, Lincoln, NE 68529 or email me at sash@nebraskasportscouncil.com with questions.

I asked retired General Roger Lempke for help in choosing a charity to support, and the note below is his response:

You have probably read of the problems with traumatic brain injury that our troops suffer from after encounters with improvised explosive devices (IED).  Sometimes the injuries are easily diagnosed; sometimes the symptoms are more subtle.  Regardless, the Madonna Institute for Rehabilitation Sciences and Engineering, right here in Lincoln, is one of the few locations in the country capable of fully treating this condition.  Troops from all over the country, including some from Nebraska, are being sent here for treatment.

TBI is becoming the “agent orange” phenomenon of the Gulf War.  If you go to the Madonna web site under giving you will find “Clinical Innovation for Patient Care.”  Under this topic you will find more information about TBI.

Take a look at the web site and tell me you think.  This is the most timely and immediate need that our troops returning from battle have.

     Roger

Again, thank you for your consideration.  And, if you need any more help in making up your mind, I ask you to watch this video.  Our troops need our help.
